mecwacare has expanded its presence in Melbourne’s inner east with the opening of John Hood Terrace in Richmond, responding to growing demand for centrally located aged care options as the local population ages.

Inner-city LGAs such as Yarra are forecast to account for more than 60 per cent of metropolitan Melbourne’s growth between 2021 and 2036. With only one other aged care home in the suburb, also operated by mecwacare, the provider says the new facility is designed to give older residents the chance to remain connected to their long-standing communities.

“That’s why mecwacare is investing in new infrastructure that allows older residents to remain in the communities they’ve called home for decades,” Chief Executive Officer Anne McCormack said.

“Our Model of Care is more than a framework, it’s a promise. A promise to deliver compassionate, connected, high-quality support wherever and whenever it’s needed, so every person can live with dignity, independence and joy.”

Ms McCormack said the desire to stay embedded in familiar neighbourhoods is shaping future development. “As our population continues to age, we are mindful that many people want to stay connected to the communities and neighbourhoods they’ve been part of for decades. By expanding our presence in Richmond and looking ahead to future development across Victoria, we’re aiming to ensure more older Australians can access quality care without having to leave the areas they know and love.”

Among the first residents is Wendy, who has lived in Richmond for 30 years and says the move has already made a meaningful difference.

“I am so happy to remain here in Richmond. I know every aspect of my neighbourhood every street, every shop,” Wendy said. “John Hood Terrace is just around the corner from where I lived and all my children and grandchildren are close by. Being here has already made a big difference in my life. A friend even said I look younger because I feel more at ease. All the little things are taken care of by the wonderful mecwacare team.”

The facility is named in honour of long-serving board member John Hood, who joined the organisation in 1999 and served for 22 years, including 11 as Chair. The former Richmond Hill Hotel has been redeveloped to retain its historic exterior while incorporating modern design and comfort. The site now includes 77 aged care suites across five levels, with upper floors offering views across the Melbourne skyline.

mecwacare operates 22 residential aged care homes across Victoria and has been providing care services for more than 65 years.
