SwanCare CEO announces retirement after 19 years

SwanCare Chief Executive Officer Graham Francis will retire after 19 years with the organisation, ending a storied chapter in the aged care industry.

Appointed as SwanCare CEO in 2008 during the height of the global financial crisis, Mr Francis steadied the ship and guided the organisation through a challenging time. 

Kim Hocking, Chair of SwanCare Group, said his stewardship was pivotal in navigating through significant changes and setting a solid foundation for future success. 

“SwanCare’s status as a leading aged care provider in Western Australia for over 60 years owes much to Graham’s vision and dedication over the past 16 years as CEO,” Ms Hocking said. 

“His leadership has been instrumental in our growth and the evolution of our organisational culture. We are profoundly grateful for his contributions at SwanCare and the aged care sector.” 

SwanCare operates four residential aged care homes and two retirement communities, while it also provides home care services primarily through Perth’s southeast region. A 600-strong team of staff provide quality services across the board.

Mr Francis described his experience as an incredible journey, sharing that he’s loved every minute of his time at SwanCare. 

“Together, we have overcome some amazing challenges and have grown SwanCare into one of Western Australia’s leading retirement village and aged care operators,” he said.

“I am immensely proud of our dedicated staff for the outstanding work they do every day. Their commitment has been instrumental in fostering the strong, purpose-driven culture that defines SwanCare – a culture focused on creating a caring and vibrant community for our residents.”

He thanked past and present Board members for their unwavering support, guidance and insight, while also thanking external contractors, stakeholders, and business contact. 

“Your dedication to our shared vision has been instrumental in shaping SwanCare into the thriving community it is today,” he added.

“As I look back on my time with SwanCare, I do so with a lifetime of memories and friendships that I will always cherish. SwanCare will forever be a part of my life.

“The organisation is in a very stable and sustainable position, with plans already in place to ensure that it continues to thrive and grow. I am committed to staying on until the end of the year to ensure a smooth transition and to leave SwanCare in a terrific position to continue the great work we’re doing.”

With an official retirement date of December 20, the Board has formed a recruitment sub-committee to identify his successor. Paul Grzelec, General Manager of Growth and Support Services, will serve as Interim CEO if a new CEO is not appointed before December. 

Mr Grzelec’s 16-year tenure at SwanCare ensures an experienced pair of hands will help guide them through any transition period.

Mr Francis leaves a lasting legacy at the Western Australian organisation, with Ms Hocking sharing that his blend of strength and empathy sets a high standard for future leadership.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to Graham for his extraordinary leadership and the indelible mark he has left on SwanCare over the past 19 years. His visionary guidance and unwavering commitment have been instrumental in shaping our organisation’s success and impact,” Ms Hocking added.

“As he embarks on the next chapter of his life, we wish him every happiness and fulfilment, confident that his legacy will continue to inspire us for years to come.”
