Australia’s aged care homes often lack the appropriate guidance and privacy necessary for older people to enjoy fulfilling intimate relationships.
Over a career spanning 30 years, I can identify two major failings that contribute to the majority of issues that have plagued the sector – the abject failure of the regulatory framework and Australia’s prevalent absence of respect and value for our Elders.
Aged Care Week 2026 brought sector leaders to Sydney to confront governance, AI, recruitment and rights-based care head-on. Across three days, a clear theme emerged: providers leaning into honest, on-the-ground lessons to shape a more sustainable future.
