New forecasts show Australia’s aged care sector is entering a two-wave surge in population ageing, with 2.5 million more people aged 65+ and 1.3 million more aged 80+ by the mid-2040s. Demand is accelerating just as 23% of the workforce approaches retirement.
Of the more recent reforms that caught everyone’s attention in the sector has been the reduction of The Quality Standards from eight to seven, marking a pivotal shift towards a more focused and structured person-centred approach. This change not only highlights the evolving nature of aged care but also emphasises the urgent need for comprehensive education within the sector to ensure the successful implementation of these Standards.
The use of “big data” or sharing data between aged care providers, clinicians, other health services and the Government is providing a comprehensive picture of the touchpoints older people have with aged and health services and is now becoming part of the conversation to reform the sector. It may be the answer to more targeted and cost effective supports.
A rapidly ageing population and the pressure this will put on our aged care services is one of the biggest challenges facing the industry, says Lite n’ Easy National Business Development Manager for Home Care, Sarah Simeon.
